Get prepared as you head off to campus with these college moving and packing tips

If you’re a college student getting ready to move to campus for your first time or you’re returning for another year, then it’s time to start preparing!

Whether you’re in a dorm or off-campus housing, it’s important to make sure you pack efficiently and effectively for a college move.. More times than not, you’re going to be living in smaller spaces with more than one person, so it’s smart to ensure you bring only what you need with you. Also keep in mind if there’s something you don’t have, you can always pick it up in your new city after you’ve moved in.

We’ve come up with a solid guide for things you might want to bring with you, as well as tips for how to pack and move them safely.

Buy essential items after moving in

This will save you a significant amount of space when moving your belongings. You can buy toiletries or food when you get to campus, so save your packing space for important items like clothes, electronics, and items you need for classes.

Keep fragile objects bubble wrapped

It goes without saying that if there’s a chance that an object you’re bringing to school can break – like a laptop, mirror, or picture – you’re going to ensure sure it’s wrapped and secured in a box.

Use bubble wrap if you have it, or you can use items from around the house such as a dish towel or blanket. This will provide protection and cushioning during transportation.

Don’t over pack

It’s very easy to think that you need to bring everything you own with you to college, but it’s important to remember you’re moving into a much smaller space than you have at home. Start off by packing just the basics that you need – clothes, shoes, electronics, pillows, and blankets – and then assess what you need to add after you’ve unpacked.

Utilize your space

If you’re bringing something like a trash can for your room or drawers for storage, pack items in those before moving and take advantage of that storage space This will create more space in your vehicle and allow you to get the most out of the space you have.

Keep your leftover boxes

Whatever you decide to pack and move your items in, be sure to keep it. This will come in handy when the end of the school year comes and you need to move out. Moving boxes can easily be broken down, folded, and stored under a bed. When it’s time to move out, just get out the packing tape and assemble your boxes.

When moving to college, here are important items you’ll want to buy for your dorm, house, or apartment:
